The Traditional Customs and Folklore in Thailand

The traditional customs and the folklore of Thai people in the 20th century was a time when modernity changed the face of Thailand and a great number of traditions disappeared or became adapted to modern life.

Still, the strife towards refinement, rooted in ancient Siamese culture, consisting in promoting what is refined and avoiding coarseness is the main emphasis in the daily life of all Thai people and topmost in theirscale of values.

Thai Culture and Business Etiquette (Part Two)

In Part Two, we continue looking at Thai culture and the importance of being aware of social customs and practices when doing business in Thailand.

Body Language

Touching between people of the same sex is more common in Thailand than in many other Asian countries. However, touching someone of the opposite sex is taboo. Do not show affection in public. Never touch or pass anything over anyone’s head. The head is considered sacred in Thailand and must be respected.

Thai Culture and Business Etiquette

Thai value systems regarding dress, social behavior, religion, authority figures, and sexuality are much more conservative than those of the average Westerner. Although the Thais are an extremely tolerant and forgiving race of people blessed with a gentle religion and an easygoing approach to life, visitors would do well to observe proper social customs to avoid embarrassment and misunderstanding.

Thais are tolerant of individualism, but find comfort and security in being part of a group. Thais are productive and hard working while at the same time happy with what they are and what they have materially. They are smiling, pleasant, humble and patient people who laugh easily, speak softly, are slow to anger, and never try to cause anyone to lose face. Thais are very proud of their cultural heritage and enjoy talking about it with visitors.

Two New Books on Pattaya Life and Thai Culture

How to Survive Pattaya and its Nightlife

How to Survive Pattaya and its Nightlife is advice to do just that from the leading Pattaya nightlife writer, Australian journalist Duncan Stearn.

Pattaya is, without doubt, the leading nightlife destination in Asia. That's a big claim of course, but with a variety of nightclubs, discos, outside drinking bars (known simply as beer bars) and what would be termed strip clubs in other countries but called go-go’s in Pattaya (and Bangkok), it oozes sex and sensuality. Duncan Stearn, under the pen-name Nightmarch, has been writing about the bar scene in Pattaya since the turn of the century.

Thai Boxing - Muay Thai in Thailand

The ancient martial art of Muay Thai-- also known as Thai boxing.

Thai boxing or Muay Thai is an ancient martial art, well known throughout the world. Lately many people have been coming to Thailand to learn how to fight Muay Thai.

Muay Thai (Thai Boxing)

An internationally known sport, Muay Thai has been practised since the era of King Naresuan (1555-1605), during which Muay Thai became a compulsory part of the military training.

FOR SALE: PATTA VILLAGE, 3BED/3BATH, EAST PATTAYA

Chernobyl, Pyongyang and Hull such delights used to be reasonably high on my list of places to avoid and nestled amongst, but these days Pattaya has certainly turned itself around.

Okay, okay so a decent number of the estimated 8 million visitors who visited this once famously city during 2012 might have been lonely hearted fellas with a GSOH whom WLTM ladies for fun, evenings out, country walks and “possibly romance”, but seriously, a large bulk of the visitors to Pattaya would have been domestic travellers from Bangkok and beyond who favour the vibrant city life and excellent golf courses over the beach for their holidays.

Culture

Thailand has a rich legacy of cultural influence that has benefited from several very civilized and organized kingdoms dating back more than a thousand years. The strength and advanced development of Sukhothai in the fourteenth century and Ayuthaya during the Seventeenth and Eighteenth century resulted in a flourishing of artistic expression, mostly inspired by Buddhism. Even during the current Rattanakosin era the country dominated this region of Southeast Asia late in the nineteenth century, but until recently Pattaya was no more than an insignificant fishing village that saw little cultural development.
